There is an immediate attraction between them, something that exists only in their imaginations at this point. Zaara is a charismatic poet who has returned home to Bombay to make his fortune; Meera is the daughter of a man (Victor Bannerjee) who has made his fortune as a film financier, and has become rich as well as powerful. Meera’s father is determined that Meera should marry one of her father’s associates; in truth, he would prefer if she married the suave Malik (Dalip Tahil). As with most Bollywood movies about love, there is something that threatens the relationship between Zaara and Meera. But it isn’t simply petty interference in this instance; in fact, it isn’t merely one thing at all. The first threat to the young couple is revealed to us through a flashback. It is a scene from Meera’s childhood, and begins with a little boy (Shah Rukh Khan) asking the two girls if they would like to play a game. The boy has a new bike, and offers to race the girls for it. Even though Meera is several years younger than him, she defeats him—and takes his bike as her prize. In winning the bike she also wins the attention of Zaara. And so, their relationship begins: Zaara loves Meera for her pride and daring; Meera loves Zaara for his strength and skill with horses—and especially his horse Veer. cfa1e77820
